An original Greek perfume bottle called a lekythos, circa 300 BC

Description

An original Greek perfume bottle called a lekythos, circa 300 BC.
This exquisite bottle is decorated with black-figure painting technique, depicting a chariot with horses, meander patterns, and spears on the neck. These small, luxurious flasks were used to store perfume or precious oils that were taken to the bathhouse. They were also often given as lavish gifts in burial rites.

The lekythos is attributed to the so-called “Haimon Painter,” a group of artists from a specific time period who shared a similar style. A characteristic feature of this group is the use of fine incised lines to separate the black figures.

Comparable lekythos vases can be found in renowned museums such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the British Museum, the Harvard Art Museums, the Getty Museum, and the Rijksmuseum van Oudheden.
